The sweetest Mother’s Day message from my daughter said “to the best burnt toast eating mom!!!”
Yes, we’d like to think that the world is a better place because of the abysmal supply of “burnt toast eating moms” who will: a) take the least desirable part of the chicken like the broken wing tip so the rest of the family can partake of the choicest cuts; b) not sleep in on Saturday morning so she can do laundry and iron those cotton work shirts (haven’t they heard of wrinkle-free shirts!!!); c) rush home after a long hard day’s work at the office to prepare dinner for her brood of grown up kids (yes, grown up who can very well cook their own dinners) and even make extra portions for their lunch bags to bring to work the next day; and yes, eat the darkest burnt toast while the kids have their perfectly- toasted slices of Wonder Bread!!!
Kidding aside, the recent Ancop Walk (Answering the Cry of the Poor) in downtown Toronto allowed me to be ONE with thousands of “burnt toast eating moms” in Toronto and other parts of the world whose “burnt toast” is having to leave their husbands and children back home to work overseas as live-in caregivers so their families can have better lives.
Supporting the causes championed by ANCOP, either by donating money to help build a home for a poor family or sponsoring a child in need is my own humble way of helping ease the burden on these poor families in the Philippines and other parts of the world so there is no longer a need for them to be apart from each other in order to survive.
Imagine the pain of being away from your family over a long period of time, not being there for the important milestones of your children’s lives… relationships strained as children are raised by extended family members as surrogate parents…time lost that is irreplaceable. Is it worth it? Is the social cost condonable?
